The díon project has been in existence for many years and has developed considerable expertise in supporting young people over this period. The particular remit of díon is to assist/support young people in independent living and to prevent homelessness in this target group. As a project we get referrals from a number of different sources, such as the HSE (Social Work departments), Probation service, Simon Community, other Youth Organisations, self-referrals, other YMCA projects and so on. These young people are identified as at particular risk of homelessness.
Isolation, poor family circumstances, problems with drugs/alcohol and learning disabilities have been the most significant factors contributing to young people experiencing difficulties in relation to accommodation, in our experience. Part of our ongoing work is our commitment to the Cork Foyer. The foyer is an 18-bed residential unit for young people out of home, which is funded by Cork City Council. We provide an independent living skills programme (Fast Forward).
